Since opening in 1991, this magical destination has earned the esteemed Mobil Five-Star and American Automobile Association's Five-Diamond awards as well as membership in the prestigious Relais & Chateaux organization. CHATEAU du SUREAU is located just outside Yosemite National Park in Oakhurst, CA making this place a lovely retreat inside out.

Proprietress Erna Kubin-Clanin first opened her award-winning restaurant, Erna's Elderberry House, in 1984 and quickly realized she needed an Inn to accommodate the many out-of-town visitors. She and builder Gary Browns started construction on the ten-bedroom Château, adjacent to Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant, in 1990. Named for the elderberry bushes that cover the rolling property, Château du Sureau was completed in 1991.

Accommodations at the Chateau

Wrought iron gates emblazoned with the Château's elegant crest open to reveal the stately 9000 square foot stucco Inn, complete with a stone turret, parisian balconies and shuttered windows, all on nine acres of meticulously landscaped park grounds.

Walking paths, fountains, a swimming pool, a bocce court and a life-size chess set add to the natural cachet and charm of the area. Once inside, guests are quickly enveloped in the Château's extraordinary European hospitality. It was Erna's desire to bring the traditions and hospitality of Europe's grand houses to the States and she has truly captured it here. Chambermaids, attired in black dress and white linen aprons, present baskets of refreshments and tea. There is no front desk, no check in, no credit card imprinting (only a hand written bill discreetly presented before guests leave) and no televisions in the guest's rooms.

A stunning Grand Salon features a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and an exquisite circular Music Room with trompe l'oeil frescoes, a spiral limestone staircase and an intimate Breakfast Room. Each guestroom in this magical Inn is named for and decorated after the fragrant herbs and flowers grown on the Estate. Resplendent inside and out, all guestrooms have fireplaces, deluxe bathrooms with silky plush bathrobes, over-sized tubs and separate chambers for the shower and toilet. Each room represents nothing less than a delight to the senses.

The third and final phase of what can only be described as Erna's dream project, the private two-bedroom Villa Sureau, opened its doors on July 1999. Inspired by an elegant Paris Manor house, the Villa is furnished with Erna's impeccable style and taste. This secluded domain offers a private outdoor Roman Spa and is a heavenly haven for any traveler. It is accessed by its own secured gate entrance.

Elderberry Room     -     $585/night

Bright and cheerful, with high cathedral ceilings and white-washed beams, king size canopy bed and bath tiles detailed with hand painted elderberries. It's high, corner setting commands views of the Sierras and town below.

Thyme Room     -     $445/night

King-size canopy bed, arched windows and lovely courtyard setting. The room has a ramped entry and is tastefully equipped for the handicapped.

Rosehip Room     -     $560/night

Turn-of-the-century Empire style queen bedroom set, an alluring "reading nook" and a lovely sumptuous bath.

Rosemary Room     -     $560/night

King-size canopy bed with fabric that enfolds you as you sleep, a private balcony overlooking the garden below and the forested hillside beyond.

Ciboulette Room     -     $385/night

Charming French Country decor, two double beds, private bath, limestone shower but without tub. The only room without a fireplace.

Sweet Geranium Room     -     $495/night

Nestled into the corner of the Chateau with views of the gardens and Sierra Nevada, king-size canopy bed and a cozy sitting area.

Chamomile Room     -     $495/night

Fresh and crisp with high-beamed ceilings, king-size canopy bed, rich mahogany furniture, limestone bath and pristine garden view.

Lavender Room     -     $495/night

A cozy corner room with king-size sleigh bed and small balcony opening onto breathtaking views of the Estate grounds, the town below and the Sierra beyond.

The Saffron Room     -     $560/night

Dramatic and opulent, with a king -size bedroom set from 1834 of ebony wood with ivory inlay, floor-to-ceiling tapestry, black marble fireplace, yellow and black marble bath.

Mint Room     -     $585/night

Reservations Policy

 

Château du Sureau will accept reservations up to one year in advance. A two-night minimum stay is required for Friday and Saturday arrival; holiday weekends may require a three-night stay as they are the busiest times. Also, holiday stays are on a full pension plan and require different rates, please inquire at time of booking. To secure your reservation, a 50% deposit is required. Visa, Master Card, American Express are accepted.

 

The Chateau is situated in a small Sierra town - far from the maddening crowds- thus, last minute cancellations greatly affect business. As a result, the Chateau Du Sureau must maintain a firm cancellation policy for non-arrival or early departure, no matter the reason.

 

Cancellation Policy:

 

Cancellations made more than fourteen days prior to arrival:

• Your deposit will be refunded, less a 10% administrative fee, or
• You can elect to have your payment held and applied in full towards a future booking
  

For cancellations made fourteen days or less prior to arrival:

• You will be held financially responsible for the entire length of your booked stay unless a new guest takes your room.

 

Check In & Check Out

 

Your stay unfolds at 3:00 p.m. and comes to a close at 12:00 noon on your departure date. Should you need to arrive early or depart late, special arrangements may be possible if made in advance.

 

Directions

 

With convenient access to and from three major cities, the Estate is a short 45 minute drive from Fresno, about a 4 hour drive from the San Francisco area, and approximately 6 hours north of Los Angeles. International air service is available in San Francisco and Los Angeles with daily commuter flights to and from Fresno. Car rental is available at all three locations. Chateau du Sureau is located 14 miles south of the south gate entrance to Yosemite National Park.
