Snowmobiling inside the park is subject to several national park regulations. Only certain models of snowmobile are allowed inside the park and you must be accompanied by a certified guide at all times while riding inside the park.

Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing
Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing is another popular winter sport in the area. Yellowstone Park is home to many cross country trails in the winter season. Both groomed ski and snowshoeing trails and backcountry routes are available in many areas of the park. Winter provides a fantastic opportunity to see a side of the park that is not available during the summertime. The chances of wildlife viewing is always better in the winter time, and the kaleidoscope of snow, steam and ice transforms the Yellowstone countryside into a completely different world from the one that most visitors see during the rest of the year.
Anyone taking overnight excursions into the park must obtain a Backcountry Permit from the park ahead of time. The Old Faithful area is a favorite location among skiiers because it has 40 miles of cross-country courses. One popular 8-mile trail beginning at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge is called Lonestar Geyser Trail, and takes skiers into a secluded wilderness setting. The Fern Cascades Trail takes skiers around a 3-mile loop leading around the Old Faithful geyser basin. The Biscuit Basin Trail and Upper Geyser Basin Trail are near Mammoth Hot Springs. These trails may take up to a full day, but visitors claim they are worth the time.
Downhill Skiing
If you are more of an alpine/downhill ski enthusiast, you will appreciate that there are several great ski resorts in the area as well.
Big Sky Ski Resort is located about 12 miles northwest of the Town of West Yellowstone. Big Sky is a very family friendly ski resort. It has 150 trails, including easy trails for beginners and challenging runs and wall rides for experts. They also offer ski clinics and camps for people of all ages.
Grand Targhee Resort is located just south of Yellowstone Park on the western slopes of the Teton Mountains. This area averages 500 inches of fluffy snow every year. Grand Targhee Resort is recognized for its variety of runs, which cater to skiers of all abilities, and its family-oriented amenities including slope-side daycare.

A guide is required at all times when riding inside Yellowstone National Park. An entrance fee of $15 per snowmobile is mandatory to enter the park. People taking trails outside of the park do not need a guide and off-trail play is allowed. The entire landscape in and around Yellowstone is beautiful in the wintertime. There are trails up to panoramic mountain viewpoints, or visitors can coast along the lovely Snake River. There are many snowmobile-only resorts throughout the area to stop in for something to eat or to relax.
Custom and standard tours are available for booking both for groups and single riders.
All Rendezvous snowmobile models come with handlebar heaters. One full tank of gas is provided each day. Riders leave with detailed maps of all marked trails in the area. Helmets are required for all passengers, but insurance is optional. Snow apparel is available to rent at low prices together or separately including snowsuits, boots, mittens, and helmets. Boxed lunches are also sold from the rental operator location. Up to 10 snowmobiles may be rented per tour group.

Canyon Explorer
Yellowstone's 'Grand Canyon' is quite a sight to see! The Lower Falls of Yellowstone River drops an impressive 308 ft. This tour will also take you past some of Yellowstone's hottest and most dynamic gyeser basins including Norris Gyeser Basin, Steamboat Geyser and more. Box lunches are required for this trip as there is no dining options provided at the canyon.

Three Bear Lodge Snow Recreation Packages
Winter season is the perfect time to vacation in Yellowstone National Park. Snowmobile rentals and snowcoach tours are offered at Three Bear Lodge in West Yellowstone, Montana. Visitors may choose from an assortment of snowmobile models and packages that include the rental, lodging, and meals at the Three Bear Restaurant. There are also guided snowcoach tours in comfortably spacious vans that take guests on a day trip around the Old Faithful Geyser or the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. There are eight snowmobiles models rented through the lodge, two of which have environmentally friendly standards approved for use within Yellowstone National Park.
