When Glacier National Park was first established the Great Northern Railway built lodges for travelers to utilize. These lodging facilities included a series of hotels and small backcountry lodges, called chalets, throughout the park. Today several hotels and chalets, built by the Great Northern Railway in the early 1900's, and updated as needed, house summer guests to the park.

In the early days a visit to Glacier National Park involved a train ride to the park. Once guests got off the train at Belton, now West Glacier, they would embark on a multi-day journey on horseback to travel through and enjoy Glacier National Park. To see the Park visitors had the option of hiking, or horseback riding. To make the Glacier more accessible to visitors Going-To-The-Sun road was built in 1932, after 11 years of construction.

Today Going-To-The-Sun road is one of the most popular drives in Glacier National Park. It is a spectacular 52 mile, paved two-lane highway that bisects the park east and west. Going-To-The-Sun crosses over the continental divide and allows visitors to Glacier National Park to experience some of the most amazing scenery in North America.
