In July of 2007, Glacier National Park opened the option for park visitors to access many destinations along the Going-to-the-Sun Road while enjoying the spectacular scenery by riding on one of the park’s optional and environmentally-friendly shuttle buses. The shuttle system was established to offer a travel option for visitors to avoid traffic and parking problems associated with rehabilitation of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, and to offer an alternative to driving for park users.
The transit system provides two-way service along Going-to-the-Sun Road between the Apgar Transit Center and St. Mary Visitor Center. Buses run every 15 or 30 minutes dependent on location and time of day between approximately 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. from July 3, 2008 through and including September 1, 2008. Visitors are encouraged to use a wide range of information at the Apgar Transit Center and St. Mary Visitor Center to assist in understanding the full range of options to enjoy the park. There is no additional charge to ride the shuttle, no tickets are required, and transit stops are clearly marked along the Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Once visitors reach their destinations, reboarding other buses along the route is easy; just a brief wait at one of the shuttle stops. The stops feature interpretive and educational information regarding the history and features of the park, Podcasting opportunities, and family-fun activities to help pass the time while you wait.
Current bus schedules are posted at each shuttle stop, at informational kiosks available inside visitor centers and transit centers.
