One Last Hurrah

by Astrid Sieger

Yesterday Going-to-the Sun Road was open for the last day this year.  Accordingly we took a drive up the spectacular 52 mile, paved two-lane highway the connects west and east glacier national park.  The day was cloudy so not terrific for picture taking but amazing for the views.

Once at the top we parked the car at the visitors center and hiked the Hidden Lake Trail.  It was glorious to hike along the trail, past multiple glaciers, outstretching prairie, and grazing mountain goats. At the top of the trail is a lookout point with stunning views of Hidden Lake. The view of the sapphire waters full of trout define this mountain lake that is as refreshing after the 1.5 mile hike as the bottle of cold water that I brought to my lips.

After photo ops and discussions about nature we turned around and headed back down the trail.  The mountain goats were now lying in groups watching hikers descend back down the trail as clouds grew a bit darker with the impending setting sun and the end of another marvelous season at Glacier National Park.

Good News First

Filed under: Uncategorized — National Park Reservations @ 7:26 pm

a-fi.jpgGood news for the Montana, cooler weather is helping control the wildfires that have torn through here and the western part of the country. In Northwest Montana fire bosses have decided to lower fire restrictions across the region early next week, largely because of a significant change in weather and fire behavior. We should be similar good news in other parts of the West as well.

Although fire restrictions have been lowered travelers should be aware that continued smoky conditions in many areas are evidence that the 2007 fire season isn’t finished. Be aware of fires and fire restrictions in your area and areas to which you are traveling, particularly wooded areas such as are found at national parks across the country.

Get out there and enjoy the rest of the summer!
