A national park vacation is a fun, educational experience that can be a fulfilling summer event for the whole family.  As in any situation the unexpected should always be planned for.  Though we may not know when, how or even if an injury or illness will creep up on our vacation it is important to know some of the health and safety precautions taken by the administrators of the national park system.

Emergencies and Medical Service
First-aid services are available at all visitor centers, and ranger and warden stations. Please call 911 for immediate help regarding all emergencies. There are direct numbers for various types of emergencies, you can find a listing of these at your visitors center, check into it when entering the park and keep these numbers handy.  Keep in mind that at the national parks we are all responsible for the health and safety of not only ourselves but everyone around us.  If you see trouble please call for help, you never know if you are the only person who has spotted the troubles.  Emergencies include out of control fires,  medical (if anyone is injured or needs medical attention for altitude sickness, diabetis attacks, or heart attack call a local number or 911 immediately).

Always let someone know where you are going.  If you are taking a hike it is a good idea to write your plans down and leave them on the desk in your hotel.  You might also mention what your plans are at the front desk, though it is not the responsibility of the employees to know what your schedule is it can come in handy for someone to know where you headed of to in case of an emergency.

Lastly, use common sense.  Don’t wander off alone.  When hiking and exploring stay with your group as the wilderness is a big place and though it may not look like it getting lost is a real possibility.  Stay on all trails.  Never wander off the trail to explore, this can be dangerous and it is difficult for your party or search team to find those who go off trail.

Keep these tips in mind and you will up your chances of having a wonderful time on your national park vacation!
