Rock Your World

Every morning I check the major search engines for any news of a national park nature. Today I found this headline “Teen finds 2.93-carat diamond along path†(http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070606/ap_on_fe_st/odd_diamond_find).  I have several friends and family who are rock connoisseurs and so I can appreciate the thrill one may get from finding a beautiful rock and especially a diamond!Â
Â
A special place to go for rockhouding would be Mt. Rushmore. The unique geology of the Black Hills ranks it in the top five locations in the United States for variety of minerals. Besides the obvious “rock” gold, rockhounds can find more than 40 different minerals here, including rose quartz, copper, silver and feldspar.
Â
What can you do with rocks that you find? Well, besides the obvious which would be jewelry you copper can be used in art, silver in smithing, and feldspar in pottery! Gems and rocks are used in decorative yard accents, home accents and the aforementioned jewelry such as necklaces, rings and earrings. In addition many people enjoy simply the adventure of finding and identifying rocks.
